Having not ever read Shakespeare's Macbeth, I'm curious what it is about that story that makes it a comparison to some modern works I'm reading. Example: I just finished the first few installments of the anime/manga Berserk. Multiple summaries and plot outlines suggest it is akin to Macbeth. If anyone knows about Berserk, they'll know how dark and demonic it becomes. Is Shakespeare's Macbeth really an accurate comparison to works like this? What is it that makes them similar?

What is Macbeth based on? Shakespeare based the story off of Holinshed's Chronicles, which is a historical account of the history of Scotland and England. Much of Shakespeare's histories are from that source. Macbeth is based on the story of the real King Macbeth, a story that is riddled with inaccuracies and propaganda.

I have always appreciated the primers for literature that I have received in college. A text such as Walden by Thoreau is made much less daunting once you understand the American Transcendentalist movement, Thoreau's life, and the surrounding ideas, as well as a background on his literature. If I were to read Walden with no prior knowledge, I might get through it, I may even enjoy it, but I won't understand a lot of it. Importantly: I will have an experience with the text that lacks the backgrou...

I'm not talking about people who break a child's confidence and so they don't amount to anything. This is more someone who believes something about you, let's say that you're dishonest or a rulebreaker (not always a negative belief about you), and you eventually live up to their positive or negative expectation of you. I'm pretty sure I learned this word 25+ years ago with Macbeth, when the witch told him his destiny, but when it didn't happen he took action. He became what the witch predicted...

Macbeth Theme of Appearance and Reality. Another significant theme in the play is the disparity between appearance and reality. How people perceive things, what their eyes see and what their own biases permit them to believe, is apparent throughout Macbeth.Even as the play opens, the witches speak to this theme, indicating nothing is what it may seem:

William Shakespeare's Macbeth takes place in Scotland in the 11th century AD, and it tells the story of Macbeth, thane of Glamis, and of his ambition to become king. This Shakespearian tragedy is loosely based on historical sources, namely Holinshed's Chronicles, and there is historical documentation on several characters, including Macbeth, Duncan, and Malcolm.

So, perceived wisdom often is that you have to win Director and/or the applicable Screenplay award if you want to win Picture (the last time this didn't happen is Chicago in 2002), so I was wondering what our thoughts were on the state of the screenplay races right now, as a change of pace from the hyper-focus on the entertaining drama of the Best Actress race. Adapted Screenplay, in my opinion, probably looks like The Power of the Dog, Dune, West Side Story, CODA (which all to me make Picture ...

And then there is the Strong ...

In this very long post, I examine the origin and implications of the commonly accepted idea that the Cthaeh does not lie. I'll examine the Cthaeh's words and how well they support variations of this idea, then finish up with some more opinionated analysis. (All of the quotes in the post come from Chapter 104 of Wise Man's Fear.) **First, let's look at the basis for why we believe the Cthaeh doesn't lie.** It all comes down to one statement from Felurian, shortly after Kvothe re...

If Starmer continues, as it looks like he will, then Labour is dead to me. Seemingly his entire raison d'être now is to be a lesser evil against the Tories. If you ask me now, and especially after the last few days, who I consider to be the lesser evil, my answer is Boris Johnson. I consider Starmer to be a more pathological liar than Boris Johnson, and indeed, as close to Donald Trump in dishonesty as I have seen in a British politician. One also has to consider the sheer Frank Underwood *co...
